In watchmaking, enamel dials are renowned among enthusiasts for their rarity and high value, as they require multiple layers of coating and repeated firing.
Enamel-painted dials are even more challenging; each firing risks not only damaging the coating but also ruining the intricate artwork painstakingly painted by the artist with the finest brushstrokes. This is why it is often called the "art that burns an artist's soul."
The Art of Pushing Boundaries
At Halcyon Watch, unlike traditional metal substrates, we use porcelain, which brings more stunning effect but also comes with significant challenges.
Porcelain requires a firing temperature of 1400°C, far higher than the 800°C melting point of copper. This allows the enamel to be fired at higher temperatures, resulting in more vivid colors.
However, porcelain cannot withstand rapid temperature changes, requiring significantly longer heating and cooling times for each firing. This extends the creation process of a single artwork from days to as long as two weeks or even a month.
